NGC 1175

NGC 1175 is a lenticular galaxy located approximately 240 million light-years away in the constellation Perseus. It was discovered on October 5, 1784, by astronomer William Herschel.

As a lenticular galaxy, NGC 1175 is classified as an S0 type. This means it exhibits characteristics intermediate between spiral and elliptical galaxies. It possesses a prominent central bulge and a flattened disk, but lacks well-defined spiral arms. It also contains relatively little gas and dust, which is typical of galaxies with suppressed star formation.

NGC 1175 is a member of the Perseus Cluster (Abell 426), a massive and X-ray luminous galaxy cluster known for its high concentration of galaxies and its active galactic nucleus (AGN) residing in the central galaxy, NGC 1275. Its membership within this rich cluster suggests its morphology and evolution may have been influenced by interactions with other galaxies and the intracluster medium.

Studies of NGC 1175 have contributed to understanding the formation and evolution of lenticular galaxies in dense environments such as galaxy clusters. Further observations are needed to fully characterize its stellar population, internal dynamics, and relationship with the Perseus Cluster.
