Armello
Armello is a digital tabletop role-playing game developed by League of Geeks. Released in 2015, it blends elements of traditional board games, card games, and character-based RPGs within a dark fairytale setting populated by anthropomorphic animal clans.
Gameplay: Armello is typically played by four players (human or AI) who each control a Hero representing one of the four major animal clans: the Bear, Rabbit, Wolf, and Rat. The objective is to become the new King or Queen of Armello before the current King succumbs entirely to a corruption known as the Rot.
Players navigate the procedurally generated hexagonal game board, completing quests, exploring dungeons, battling other players and creatures, and gathering resources. The game incorporates a day/night cycle which influences gameplay elements.
Victory Conditions: There are multiple paths to victory:
- Spirit Stone Victory: Collect four Spirit Stones and cleanse the King.
- Rot Victory: Amass more Rot than the King and slay him in battle.
- Prestige Victory: Be the hero with the highest Prestige score when the King dies of Rot.
- Kingslayer Victory: Slay the King with a high level of Rot, dealing the final blow in combat.
Key Mechanics:
- Dice Rolls: Dice are rolled for combat and skill checks, with symbols representing different effects.
- Cards: Players draw and play cards from a hand, using them for combat buffs, movement options, spells, and traps. Cards are drawn from three distinct decks: Items, Followers, and Tricks.
- Quests: Completing quests advances a Hero's stats and provides rewards.
- Rot: A corrupting force that grants power but also poses risks.
Setting: The game is set in the kingdom of Armello, a land teetering on the brink of chaos as the King is afflicted by the Rot. The art style features a blend of fantasy and fairytale elements, with a somber and slightly macabre tone.
Development: Armello was developed by the Australian indie studio League of Geeks and was successfully funded through Kickstarter.
