America³ (1992 yacht)
America³, also stylized as America Cubed, was a 75-foot long racing yacht that successfully defended the America's Cup in 1992. It was designed by a team led by Bill Langan and built by Goetz Custom Boats for the America³ Foundation, a syndicate led by businessman Bill Koch.
The yacht was notable for its innovative design features, including a carbon fiber hull and deck. The design team experimented with various keel configurations, ultimately choosing a conventional fin keel with a bulb. The America³ syndicate employed advanced computer modeling and tank testing to optimize the yacht's performance.
During the 1992 America's Cup challenger trials, America³ competed against other American yachts, including Stars & Stripes. It ultimately won the right to represent the United States in the America's Cup match against Il Moro di Venezia, the Italian challenger.
America³ defeated Il Moro di Venezia in a 4-1 series to retain the America's Cup for the United States. Following the victory, the yacht and its crew became national heroes. The success of America³ was seen as a triumph of American technology and teamwork in the highly competitive world of yacht racing. The name America³ (America Cubed) signified an advanced, multifaceted approach to winning the prestigious sailing trophy. After the 1992 America's Cup, the yacht was retired from active competition.
