Ge Fei (author)
Ge Fei (格非), born Wang Feng (王凡) in Dantu, Jiangsu Province in 1964, is a prominent contemporary Chinese novelist, short story writer, and literary scholar. He is considered a key figure in the "avant-garde" or "experimental fiction" (先锋小说) movement of the 1980s and 1990s in China.
Ge Fei's writing is characterized by its complex narratives, philosophical depth, and exploration of themes related to memory, history, identity, and the changing social landscape of China. He often employs non-linear storytelling techniques, unreliable narrators, and metafictional elements to challenge conventional narrative structures and engage readers in a critical examination of reality.
He graduated from the Chinese Department of East China Normal University in 1985 and later taught at the same institution. He is currently a professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Tsinghua University.
Some of his most notable works include the novels Wandering on the Island (岛上的男人, Dao shang de Nanren), The Enemy (敌人, Diren), Spring Breeze Intoxicated (春风沉醉的晚上, Chunfeng Chenzui de Wanshang) - not to be confused with Yu Dafu's short story of the same name, and the Jiangnan Trilogy: Human Face (人面桃花, Ren Mian Tao Hua), Mountain River Records (山河入梦, Shan He Ru Meng), and Floundering (春尽江南, Chun Jin Jiangnan). Floundering won the Mao Dun Literature Prize, one of China's most prestigious literary awards, in 2015.
Ge Fei's works have been translated into several languages, bringing his unique voice and perspective to an international audience. His work continues to be studied and discussed by scholars and readers interested in understanding contemporary Chinese literature and its engagement with modern Chinese history and society.
