Qullpa (Chumbivilcas-La Unión)

Qullpa refers to a naturally occurring mineral salt deposit found in the Chumbivilcas and La Unión provinces of Peru. These deposits are often located near volcanic or geothermal areas and are primarily composed of sulfates and other minerals.

In this region, "qullpa" is traditionally used as a dietary supplement for livestock, particularly camelids like llamas and alpacas. The animals instinctively seek out and consume the qullpa to obtain essential minerals that may be lacking in their regular grazing. This is thought to improve their overall health, wool quality, and reproductive success. The practice of providing qullpa to livestock is an integral part of the traditional pastoralist culture in the Andes.
