Grampian
Grampian refers to several distinct but related entities, primarily associated with the region of northeast Scotland.
1. Grampian Mountains: The most prominent meaning of Grampian refers to the Grampian Mountains, one of the three major mountain ranges in Scotland. They run roughly southwest to northeast between the Central Lowlands and the Scottish Highlands. This mountain range contains many of the highest mountains in the British Isles, including Ben Nevis (although Ben Nevis is technically part of the Lochaber range, which is often considered part of the wider Grampian range) and Ben Macdui. The mountains are characterized by their rugged terrain, glens, and diverse wildlife.
2. Grampian Region (Former Local Government Region): From 1975 to 1996, Grampian was also the name of a local government region in Scotland. It was formed from the former counties of Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, and Kincardineshire, along with part of Morayshire. It was subsequently replaced by the unitary council areas of Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, and Moray. Although the region no longer exists as an administrative division, the term "Grampian" is still used geographically to refer to the area it once covered.
3. Other Uses: The name "Grampian" may also appear in the names of businesses, organizations, or other entities located within or associated with the Grampian region of Scotland. These uses derive their name from the geographical region or the mountain range.
