The Sundowners (radio serial)
The Sundowners was an Australian radio serial drama, originally broadcast from 1952 to 1961 by the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC). It was one of the longest-running and most popular radio serials in Australian history.
The series centered around the MacDonald family, who lived on a sheep station in the Australian outback. The storylines typically involved the challenges of rural life, including drought, bushfires, and financial difficulties, as well as personal dramas and romances within the family and the local community.
The serial was known for its realistic portrayal of Australian rural life and its strong character development. It also featured a large cast of talented actors, many of whom went on to have successful careers in film and television. While initially targeted at a rural audience, The Sundowners garnered a widespread following across Australia due to its engaging narratives and relatable characters.
The show's enduring popularity led to a revival in the 1980s, though this version did not achieve the same success as the original. Recordings of the original serial are preserved in the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
