Thomas Arnold (Royal Navy officer)

Thomas Arnold (born 1801, died 1877) was a Royal Navy officer who achieved the rank of Admiral. He entered the Royal Navy in 1815 and saw service in various parts of the world, including the West Indies, the Mediterranean, and the East Indies.

Arnold's early career involved postings on a number of different ships, gradually rising through the ranks. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1823, Commander in 1834, and Captain in 1841. He commanded several vessels, including HMS Racehorse and HMS Dauntless.

He played a role in the Second Opium War (1856-1860) where he commanded HMS Winchester. His service in China was recognized and he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB).

Arnold continued to rise through the ranks after his service in China, eventually becoming a Rear Admiral in 1861, a Vice Admiral in 1867 and a full Admiral in 1872. He retired from active service and died in 1877. His career represents a typical path for a Royal Navy officer during the 19th century, encompassing a long period of service in various global locations and gradual promotion through the ranks.
