Northern Link (MTR)

The Northern Link (Chinese: 北環線; Cantonese Yale: Bak1 Waan4 Sin3) is a planned extension to the MTR rapid transit network in Hong Kong. It will connect the East Rail Line and the Tuen Ma Line, creating a loop that serves the northern New Territories. The primary objectives of the project are to improve transport connectivity in the region, stimulate economic development, and provide better access to existing and planned residential areas.

The proposed route includes new stations at Kwu Tung North and Au Tau, as well as a possible intermediate station. The Kwu Tung North station will serve the planned Kwu Tung North New Development Area. The Au Tau station will provide interchange access to potential future railway lines extending further into the northwest New Territories.

The project has been under consideration for several years, with feasibility studies and public consultations conducted to assess its potential impact and benefits. As of 2023, the project is in the planning and design stage, with construction expected to commence in the coming years. The exact timeline for completion is subject to change based on funding, environmental impact assessments, and other factors. The project faces challenges relating to land acquisition, environmental concerns, and coordination with other infrastructure projects in the area.

The Northern Link is considered a crucial piece of infrastructure for the future development of the northern New Territories. It aims to significantly improve accessibility and connectivity within the region and to other parts of Hong Kong.
