Lapathus (Cyprus)

Lapathus was an ancient city-kingdom on the north coast of Cyprus, located in the modern-day village of Lapta. It was one of the ten kingdoms of Cyprus listed on the Prism of Esarhaddon in 673/2 BC, paying tribute to the Assyrian king.

The site of Lapathus shows evidence of settlement dating back to the Late Bronze Age. During the Archaic and Classical periods, it flourished as an independent city-state, with its own coinage. The kingdom's prosperity was based on agriculture and trade, particularly copper and timber resources.

Lapathus was known for its sanctuary of Aphrodite and Adonis. Archaeological excavations have revealed remains of temples, tombs, and fortifications. The city continued to exist during the Roman and Byzantine periods, eventually declining in importance.

The name "Lapathus" is believed to be of pre-Greek origin. Its location on the northern coast made it a strategically important site throughout history, serving as a link between Cyprus and the Anatolian mainland. Today, the area is a popular tourist destination, known for its natural beauty and historical significance.
