Hope Island (Maine)
Hope Island is a small, uninhabited island located in Casco Bay, Maine. It is part of the town of Chebeague Island, Cumberland County. The island is situated approximately halfway between Chebeague Island and Cousins Island.
Historically, Hope Island has been used primarily for navigational purposes. A prominent lighthouse, the Hope Island Light, was erected on the island in 1868 to guide ships through the often-foggy waters of Casco Bay. The lighthouse remained in operation until 1932 when it was decommissioned. While the lighthouse structure remains standing, it is no longer operational.
The island itself is relatively small and rocky, with limited vegetation. Due to its size and lack of resources, Hope Island is unsuitable for permanent habitation. It is primarily visited by boaters and those interested in observing the historic lighthouse. The island is subject to the tides and currents of Casco Bay, and landing can be challenging depending on weather conditions. Ownership of the island is private.
