Golisoda

Golisoda is a popular Indian carbonated beverage, particularly common in the southern and western regions of the country. The name is a portmanteau of "goli" (Hindi/Urdu for marble) and "soda." This refers to the distinctive sealing mechanism of the bottle, which utilizes a glass marble to contain the carbonation.

The typical golisoda bottle is a Codd-neck bottle. This design features a chamber in the bottle's neck that holds the marble. The bottle is filled with carbonated water and flavoring, and the marble is then forced against a rubber washer in the neck by the pressure of the carbonation, creating a tight seal.

To open the bottle, the marble is pushed down into the chamber in the neck. The carbonation keeps the marble trapped in this chamber, allowing the liquid to be poured out. The bottles are often made of thick glass to withstand the internal pressure.

Golisoda comes in a variety of flavors, often bright and artificially colored, ranging from lemon and orange to grape and ginger. The drink is often associated with street vendors and small shops, and is considered a refreshing and affordable beverage. The act of opening the bottle, with the characteristic pop of the marble being dislodged, is part of the drink's appeal.
