William Hopkins (Bewdley MP)

William Hopkins (dates unknown) was a British politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bewdley. His tenure in Parliament was brief, lasting only from February to May 1689. He was elected following the Convention Parliament which formalized the accession of William and Mary to the throne. Hopkins replaced Sir Compton Reade, who had been deemed ineligible due to his role in collecting hearth tax, a particularly unpopular levy at the time. The circumstances surrounding Hopkins' own departure from Parliament after only a few months are not well documented, although it is believed he was unseated due to a contested election or petition. Limited information is available about his life and political activities beyond this short period in Parliament. He is considered a minor figure in the parliamentary history of the time.
