Wise Blood (film)

Wise Blood is a 1979 Southern Gothic film directed by John Huston, based on the 1952 novel of the same name by Flannery O'Connor. The film stars Brad Dourif as Hazel Motes, a young veteran returning from World War II who is determined to preach a new "Church Without Christ."

The narrative follows Hazel's journey as he struggles against his ingrained religious upbringing and his own inner turmoil. Haunted by childhood experiences and the horrors of war, Hazel arrives in the fictional town of Taulkinham, where he attempts to establish his iconoclastic anti-religion. He acquires followers, including Enoch Emery (Daniel Shor), a strange and unpredictable young man, and meets a young woman named Sabbath Lily Hawks (Amy Wright), who embodies the temptations Hazel seeks to reject.

His attempts to establish his anti-church ultimately lead to violence, self-mutilation, and a final, albeit ambiguous, embrace of spiritual asceticism.
