Tang Long (Water Margin)
Tang Long, nicknamed "Golden Haired Tiger," is a fictional character in the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. He is ranked 29th among the 36 Heavenly Spirits and 64 Earthly Fiends, forming the 108 Stars of Destiny.
Tang Long hails from Rencheng (present-day Jining, Shandong Province). He is skilled in martial arts, particularly spear fighting, but possesses a fiery temper. He is known for his distinctive golden hair.
Prior to joining the Liangshan bandits, Tang Long serves as a jailer in Dongping Prefecture under the command of Marshal Dong Ping. He becomes entangled in events involving Shi Jin, one of the earlier Liangshan heroes. After a series of events, including fighting against Shi Jin and later being defeated, Tang Long is convinced to join the Liangshan cause by Shi Jin and Lu Zhishen (the Flowery Monk).
At Liangshan, Tang Long is initially placed in charge of scouting. Later, he is assigned to oversee the construction and maintenance of the mountain fortress' defenses. He also serves as an instructor, training the Liangshan infantry in spear techniques.
Tang Long participates in many of the Liangshan bandits' campaigns and battles, showcasing his prowess with the spear. He is known for his bravery and ferocity in combat.
After the Liangshan outlaws are granted amnesty by the Song Emperor and tasked with fighting against rebel forces, Tang Long continues to serve loyally. He is among the heroes who survive the grueling campaigns against Liao invaders and various rebel groups.
In the aftermath of the campaigns, when the remaining Liangshan heroes are granted official positions, Tang Long is awarded a minor military post. His story concludes with him living out his life as a government official.
