Pendant
A pendant is a loose-hanging piece of jewelry, generally attached to a necklace or earring. The term can also refer more broadly to any object that hangs down from something else.
Jewelry Pendants:
As jewelry, a pendant is typically a single, decorative ornament. It can be made from a wide variety of materials, including precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum; gemstones; glass; enamel; wood; and plastic. The design of a pendant is virtually limitless and can range from simple geometric shapes to elaborate, intricate designs depicting animals, symbols, or portraits.
Pendants are often used to express personal beliefs, affiliations, or aesthetics. Religious symbols, cultural icons, and personal initials are common choices. Pendants can also hold sentimental value, serving as a keepsake or a reminder of a loved one.
The loop or bail, usually located at the top of the pendant, allows it to be strung onto a chain, cord, or earring hook. The size and weight of the pendant should be proportional to the chain or earring it is attached to in order to ensure a balanced and comfortable wear.
Beyond Jewelry:
While most commonly associated with jewelry, the term "pendant" can also describe anything that hangs down. For example, a hanging light fixture could be described as a pendant lamp. In geology, a pendant may refer to a hanging rock formation.
