Asoka (2001 film)
Asoka is a 2001 Indian historical drama film directed by Santosh Sivan. It is a partially fictionalized account of the early life of Emperor Asoka of the Maurya dynasty, who ruled much of the Indian subcontinent in the 3rd century BCE.
The film stars Shah Rukh Khan as Asoka and Kareena Kapoor as Kaurwaki, a princess from Kalinga. The narrative follows Asoka's journey from a young prince to a powerful emperor, highlighting his romances, battles, and eventual conversion to Buddhism after witnessing the devastation of the Kalinga War.
While not strictly historically accurate, Asoka draws inspiration from historical events and figures. It portrays Asoka's early conquests and his transformation into a pacifist ruler dedicated to Dharma.
The film is known for its visually stunning cinematography, elaborate battle sequences, and popular music composed by Anu Malik. It was released to mixed reviews but has gained a significant following over time for its epic scope and exploration of themes of war, love, and redemption. Asoka was released in both Hindi and English versions. It was also screened at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.
