Buffums
Buffums was a Southern California-based department store chain that operated from 1893 to 1990. Founded in Long Beach by Charles A. Buffum and Edwin E. Buffum, brothers from Illinois, it grew from a small dry goods store into a regional retail powerhouse known for its quality merchandise, customer service, and distinctive architectural designs.
The Buffums' brothers initially focused on providing a wide selection of goods and fostering a personal connection with their customers. Over time, they expanded their offerings to include apparel, accessories, housewares, and furniture. The store's commitment to quality extended to its store design, often incorporating innovative architectural elements for the time, creating an upscale shopping experience.
Throughout the 20th century, Buffums expanded to numerous locations throughout Southern California, including prominent stores in Pasadena, Santa Ana, and West Covina. The chain was known for its fashionable merchandise and sophisticated atmosphere, catering to a middle-to-upper class clientele.
Buffums faced increased competition in the late 20th century from national department store chains and discount retailers. Despite attempts to adapt to the changing retail landscape, the company struggled financially. In 1990, Buffums declared bankruptcy and liquidated its assets, bringing an end to nearly a century of retail presence in Southern California. The closure marked a significant loss for many loyal shoppers who remembered Buffums as a symbol of quality and style.
