Hexie (train)
Hexie (和谐号, Héxié Hào) is the designation for a series of high-speed electric multiple unit (EMU) trains operated by China Railway. The term "Hexie" translates to "Harmony" in English, reflecting the official slogan of China's railway development at the time of the trains' introduction.
The Hexie trains are based on technology transferred from various foreign manufacturers, including Siemens, Bombardier, and Alstom. Different CRH (China Railway High-speed) series, such as CRH1, CRH2, CRH3, CRH5, and CRH6, fall under the Hexie designation. Each series is distinguished by its design and the technology source. For example, CRH2 is based on the E2 Series Shinkansen design from Japan, while CRH3 is based on the Siemens Velaro platform.
The introduction of Hexie trains marked a significant advancement in China's railway infrastructure and speed capabilities, allowing for faster and more efficient transportation across the country. Over time, the Hexie trains have been gradually replaced by the Fuxing (复兴号) series of domestically developed high-speed trains, which represent a move towards greater technological independence. Despite this, many Hexie trains remain in operation on various high-speed railway lines throughout China.
