87th Regiment of Foot (Keith's Highlanders)

The 87th Regiment of Foot (Keith's Highlanders) was a Scottish infantry regiment in the British Army, raised in 1759 by Robert Murray Keith. The regiment existed for only a short period during the Seven Years' War.

The regiment was raised as part of an effort to augment the British Army during the conflict. Recruited primarily from the Scottish Highlands, the 87th was intended to capitalize on the reputation of Highland soldiers for bravery and martial prowess. Robert Murray Keith, a seasoned officer with previous experience in raising and commanding Highland troops, was given the task of forming and leading the regiment.

The 87th saw active service in Germany as part of the British contingent supporting Frederick the Great of Prussia. They participated in several key battles and campaigns, earning a reputation for their discipline and fighting spirit. However, the regiment suffered significant casualties during the war.

Following the Treaty of Paris in 1763, which brought the Seven Years' War to an end, the 87th Regiment of Foot (Keith's Highlanders) was disbanded as part of a general reduction in the size of the British Army. Its brief existence nonetheless contributed to the legacy of Highland regiments in British military history. While short-lived, the regiment played a role in a pivotal European conflict.
