City of London and Westminster South (electoral division)
The City of London and Westminster South is a former electoral division in the United Kingdom. It existed as a constituency for elections to the London County Council (LCC) and later the Greater London Council (GLC).
This electoral division encompassed two distinct areas: the historic City of London, a major financial district, and the southern portion of the City of Westminster, which includes areas such as Whitehall, home to many government departments, and Victoria.
The division's boundaries were defined by the administrative boundaries of these areas. Electoral divisions for the LCC and GLC were designed to elect multiple members, and City of London and Westminster South typically returned two or three councillors.
The LCC existed from 1889 to 1965, and the GLC from 1965 to 1986. The constituency ceased to exist when the GLC was abolished in 1986. Subsequent local government electoral arrangements for the area were different, reflecting changes in population and administrative structures. The political complexion of the division varied throughout its history, with both Conservative and Labour candidates being elected at different times. Election results were influenced by the diverse social and economic characteristics of the City of London and Westminster South.
