Gammel Dok (building)
Gammel Dok, meaning "Old Dock" in Danish, is a historical building located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Situated on Christianshavn Canal, it served as a dry dock for the Royal Danish Navy from its construction in the late 17th century until the mid-19th century.
The structure is notable for its historical significance in Danish naval history. Constructed primarily of timber, it represents a relatively early example of dry dock technology in Denmark. Ships could be floated into the dock, then the water pumped out, allowing for repairs and maintenance to be carried out below the waterline.
After its decommissioning as a naval dry dock, the building was repurposed. In the late 20th century, it underwent significant restoration and conversion. Today, Gammel Dok serves as a performance venue and cultural center, hosting a variety of theatrical performances, concerts, and other events. Its distinctive architecture, a result of its original function combined with modern renovations, makes it a recognizable landmark in the Christianshavn area.
