Hato Rey

Hato Rey is a district located within the municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is the island's principal central business district and one of the most important commercial, financial, and residential areas in Puerto Rico.

Historically, Hato Rey was primarily an agricultural area dedicated to cattle ranches and sugarcane plantations. Its name translates roughly to "King's Cattle Ranch." The area experienced significant urbanization and economic development in the mid-20th century, transforming from rural farmland to a bustling urban center.

Hato Rey is home to numerous corporate headquarters, banks, financial institutions, and government offices. It boasts a high concentration of high-rise buildings and skyscrapers, contributing significantly to San Juan's skyline. Prominent landmarks and institutions located in Hato Rey include the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot (commonly known as the "Choliseo"), the Plaza Las Américas shopping mall, and several courthouses.

The district is served by various transportation options, including the Tren Urbano (San Juan's rapid transit system) with several stations located within Hato Rey, as well as numerous bus routes and major highways.

Hato Rey is often divided into two main sections: the "Golden Mile" (Milla de Oro), which is a stretch of Avenida Ponce de León known for its concentration of banks and financial institutions, and the rest of the district, which includes residential areas, government buildings, and other commercial establishments.
