Lysefjord
Lysefjord is a fjord located in the Ryfylke area of Rogaland county in southwestern Norway. It's characterized by its steep cliffs, dramatic landscape, and length of 42 kilometers (26 miles). The name translates roughly to "light fjord," likely derived from the light-colored granite rocks along its sides.
Lysefjord is a popular tourist destination, known for several iconic landmarks, including:
-
Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock): A steep cliff rising 604 meters (1,982 feet) above the fjord, offering panoramic views. It is one of Norway's most visited natural tourist attractions.
-
Kjeragbolten: A large boulder wedged in a mountain crevice, a popular (and somewhat perilous) photo opportunity. Reaching Kjeragbolten involves a challenging hike.
-
Flørli 4444: The world's longest wooden staircase, consisting of 4,444 steps that climb alongside a defunct hydro-electric power plant.
The fjord is sparsely populated, with small settlements accessible primarily by boat. Farming, fishing, and more recently, tourism, have been the main economic activities in the area. Lysefjord can be explored by ferry, sightseeing boat, or private vessel. Hiking trails offer access to the clifftops and surrounding mountains.
