Chaucer (crater)

Chaucer is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the southeast of the larger crater De Forest and northeast of the crater Ibn Firnas.

Chaucer is a relatively well-formed crater with a sharply defined rim. The inner walls are terraced, and there is a small central peak within the relatively flat interior floor. A few tiny craterlets lie along the inner walls.

The age of Chaucer is estimated to be Copernican, placing it in the most recent period of lunar geologic history. This estimate is based on the sharply defined features and lack of significant degradation.

Chaucer is named for Geoffrey Chaucer, the renowned English author of The Canterbury Tales. The naming was approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
