USS Chesapeake (FFG-64)
The USS Chesapeake (FFG-64) was an Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate of the United States Navy. She was named for the frigate USS Chesapeake of the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, a name which in turn comes from the Chesapeake Bay.
FFG-64 was laid down on 6 April 1987 by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine; launched on 9 January 1988; and commissioned on 19 November 1988 in Baltimore, Maryland.
As an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, the Chesapeake was designed as a mid-range escort capable of anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She carried the LAMPS helicopter system for enhanced ASW capabilities and the Mk 13 missile launcher for Standard missiles.
Throughout her service, the USS Chesapeake participated in various operations, exercises, and deployments, contributing to maritime security and U.S. foreign policy objectives. Her area of operations primarily focused on the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
The USS Chesapeake was decommissioned on 14 December 2001 in Mayport, Florida, and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 14 December 2001. She was subsequently scrapped.
