Olympic Channel (American TV channel)
The Olympic Channel (American TV channel) was a United States-based television network owned by NBCUniversal, in partnership with the International Olympic Committee. It was dedicated to Olympic sports, athletes, and stories.
Overview
The channel launched on July 15, 2017, succeeding Universal Sports Network. Its programming included live events, replays of past Olympic Games and other major competitions, original programming focused on individual athletes and teams, and documentaries. The channel aimed to promote the Olympic Movement year-round and engage audiences with the stories behind the Games.
Programming
The Olympic Channel's programming covered a wide range of sports, including both summer and winter Olympic disciplines. Specific examples included coverage of events sanctioned by various International Federations, such as skiing, swimming, gymnastics, track and field, and more. Original programming highlighted the journeys and achievements of Olympic athletes, providing behind-the-scenes access and human-interest stories.
Distribution
The channel was available on various cable, satellite, and streaming providers throughout the United States.
Closure
NBCUniversal announced in September 2022 that the Olympic Channel would cease broadcasting on September 30, 2022. Programming previously available on the channel was transitioned to other platforms within the NBCUniversal portfolio, including Peacock, NBC, and USA Network. The decision was attributed to a shift in content distribution strategy towards streaming services. The international Olympic Channel, however, continues to operate.
