Ampatuan

The Ampatuan family is a powerful political clan based in the province of Maguindanao, Philippines. Their influence extends across the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and surrounding areas. For decades, they wielded significant control over local politics, amassing considerable wealth and power. This power was often maintained through a combination of patronage, alliances, and alleged violence.

The family's name became widely known internationally following the Maguindanao massacre on November 23, 2009. This event, considered the worst election-related violence in Philippine history, involved the killing of 58 people, including journalists, lawyers, and relatives and supporters of Esmael Mangudadatu, who was challenging Datu Andal Ampatuan Jr. for the governorship of Maguindanao.

Several members of the Ampatuan family, including Andal Ampatuan Jr. and Andal Ampatuan Sr., were charged with multiple counts of murder in connection with the massacre. The trial, which lasted for years, was marked by delays and complexities due to the large number of defendants and witnesses. In December 2019, several members of the Ampatuan family were found guilty of multiple counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. However, some family members and accomplices were acquitted.
