Mount Langya (Hebei)
Mount Langya (狼牙山; Lángyá Shān), also known as Wolf Tooth Mountain, is a mountain located in Yi County (易县), Baoding Prefecture, Hebei Province, China. It is historically significant as the site of a battle during the Second Sino-Japanese War, remembered for the heroic actions of the "Five Heroes of Mount Langya."
The mountain range is characterized by its steep cliffs and rugged terrain, contributing to its strategic importance. Its highest peak reaches an elevation of approximately 1,105 meters (3,625 feet).
The mountain is known not only for its military history but also for its scenic beauty and natural features, attracting tourists and hikers. The area includes memorial sites dedicated to the Five Heroes, as well as temples and scenic overlooks.
The "Five Heroes of Mount Langya" were five soldiers of the Eighth Route Army who, in 1941, held off a much larger Japanese force, allowing the rest of their unit and the local population to escape. Faced with being surrounded, they chose to jump off a cliff rather than be captured. Two of the five survived the fall. Their actions are celebrated as a symbol of Chinese resistance against Japanese aggression.
