USS Birmingham (SSN-695)
The USS Birmingham (SSN-695) was a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarine of the United States Navy. She was the fourth ship of the Navy to be named for Birmingham, Alabama.
Ordered on January 25, 1971, Birmingham's keel was laid down on April 26, 1975, by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia. She was launched on October 29, 1977, sponsored by Mrs. Muriel Wallace, and commissioned on December 16, 1978, with Commander Richard B. Laning in command.
Birmingham underwent numerous deployments throughout her career, serving in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and other strategic locations. Details of specific missions and operations often remain classified. She participated in exercises and operations related to Cold War national security objectives and later supported post-Cold War security efforts.
The submarine was decommissioned on December 22, 1997, and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on December 22, 1997. Her scrapping via the Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard began on October 1, 2000, and was completed on November 18, 2001.
