Palkin

A palkin (also spelled palkee, paalki, or palanquin) is a covered litter or seat, usually for one person, carried on poles by two or more bearers. Historically, palkins were a traditional mode of transport for royalty, nobility, and other individuals of high social status, particularly in Asia, especially the Indian subcontinent, and parts of Africa.

Palkins varied considerably in design and construction, ranging from simple, unadorned platforms to elaborately decorated and enclosed structures with curtains or shutters for privacy. The level of ornamentation and the materials used (such as wood, ivory, silk, and precious metals) often reflected the wealth and status of the occupant.

In many cultures, the use of a palkin was a significant symbol of power, privilege, and social hierarchy. Bearers were often specially trained and belonged to particular castes or communities. The size and grandeur of a palkin procession, including the number of bearers and accompanying attendants, served to further emphasize the occupant's importance.

With the advent of modern transportation, the use of palkins has largely declined. However, they continue to hold historical and cultural significance, sometimes appearing in ceremonial processions or religious festivals. The term "palanquin" is sometimes used more generally to refer to any type of enclosed litter carried on poles.
