Pinot Meunier

Pinot Meunier (pronounced /ˌpiːnoʊ məˈnjeɪ/) is a red grape variety most famous for being one of the three main grapes used in the production of Champagne (the other two being Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). It is also known under other names, including Meunier, Schwarzriesling (in Germany), and Müllerrebe. The name "Meunier," meaning "miller" in French, and "Müllerrebe," meaning "miller's vine" in German, refer to the powdery white down on the underside of its leaves, giving them a flour-dusted appearance.

While Pinot Meunier is a variant of Pinot Noir, it buds and ripens later, making it more suitable for slightly cooler climates. This also makes it generally less susceptible to early spring frosts. It is widely planted in the Champagne region of France, particularly in the Marne Valley.

Beyond Champagne, Pinot Meunier is used to produce still red and rosé wines, often with lighter body and fruity characteristics. It is grown in various countries, including Germany, Australia, the United States (California and Oregon), and Canada.

In Champagne blends, Pinot Meunier is often valued for the fruitiness and suppleness it contributes, offering a more accessible and early-drinking character compared to Pinot Noir. It is often used to balance the structure and longevity of Pinot Noir-dominant blends or to enhance the aromatic profile of Chardonnay-based wines.
