S Scuti

S Scuti is a variable star located in the constellation Scutum. It is a classical Cepheid variable, meaning its brightness varies periodically due to pulsations within the star. These pulsations cause the star to expand and contract, changing its temperature and therefore its luminosity.

The period of S Scuti's variability is approximately 4.624 days. This period is directly related to its absolute magnitude, allowing astronomers to use it as a "standard candle" to determine distances. By comparing its observed apparent magnitude with its calculated absolute magnitude (based on its period), astronomers can estimate the distance to S Scuti and, by extension, the galaxy or star cluster in which it resides.

Cepheid variables like S Scuti are important tools in astronomy for measuring cosmic distances. They are intrinsically bright and can be observed across significant distances, enabling the calibration of the cosmic distance ladder and the determination of the size and age of the universe. S Scuti itself is not readily visible to the naked eye, requiring a telescope for observation of its brightness variations.
