New Jersey Route 18 (pre-1927)

New Jersey Route 18, prior to the 1927 New Jersey state highway renumbering, referred to a highway established in 1917 as part of the initial state highway system. This pre-1927 Route 18 ran approximately from the vicinity of Chatsworth in Burlington County generally eastward to Toms River in Ocean County.

The route was largely overlaid onto existing county roads and served as a key connector between the interior of the Pine Barrens and the coastal region. While designated as Route 18, the roads comprising the route were often unimproved or poorly maintained, typical of early state highways in New Jersey.

Upon the 1927 renumbering, the alignment of the original Route 18 was largely subsumed into a new state highway designation. Most of the former Route 18 became part of Route 37, which continued to connect inland Burlington County to Toms River. This eliminated Route 18 as a distinct designation at that time. The later, modern Route 18 that exists today is a completely different and much more recently constructed highway in a different area of the state.
