Robert Pollard (engraver)

Robert Pollard (1755-1825) was an English engraver, landscape painter, and publisher. He is primarily known for his aquatint engravings, which reproduced paintings by prominent British artists of his era.

Pollard was born in Newcastle upon Tyne. He moved to London around 1781 and established himself as a successful engraver. He specialized in aquatints, a printmaking technique that creates tonal effects similar to watercolor washes. He published his own prints and also worked for other publishers.

Pollard's engravings covered a wide range of subjects, including historical scenes, landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes. He engraved after works by artists such as Thomas Stothard, Francis Wheatley, and Angelica Kauffmann. His work is characterized by its delicate detail and atmospheric effects.

In addition to his work as an engraver, Pollard was also a landscape painter, though his paintings are less well-known than his prints. He also ran a successful publishing business, producing and distributing his own engravings and those of other artists.

Pollard's influence on the development of aquatint engraving in England was significant. He helped to popularize the technique and trained numerous students who went on to become successful engravers in their own right. His works are held in major collections around the world and remain a valuable source of information about British art and culture in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He died in Islington, London.
