Tony Smith (rugby league, born 1970)
Tony Smith (born 14 January 1970) is an Australian professional rugby league coach and former player. Primarily a halfback or five-eighth, Smith had a playing career in both Australia and England before transitioning into coaching.
As a player, Smith featured for St. George Dragons, Illawarra Steelers, and Adelaide Rams in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL). In England, he played for Workington Town.
Smith is more prominently known for his coaching career. He achieved significant success in the Super League, most notably with the Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves. He coached Leeds to back-to-back Super League Grand Final victories in 2007 and 2008. His tenure with Warrington Wolves saw them win three Challenge Cups (2009, 2010, 2012) and a League Leaders' Shield in 2011.
After departing Warrington, Smith coached the England national team for a period. He has also coached Wakefield Trinity, Hull Kingston Rovers, and has held positions in other rugby league organizations. Known for his tactical acumen and player management skills, Smith is considered one of the most successful coaches in Super League history. His career continues in rugby league, where he frequently provides commentary and insights into the game.
