Diana Golden (skier)

Diana Golden (1963-2001) was an American alpine skier, most notably known for her accomplishments in disabled skiing. Golden was diagnosed with bone cancer (osteosarcoma) at the age of 12, resulting in the amputation of her left leg above the knee. This did not deter her from pursuing her passion for skiing. She became a pioneer and dominant force in adaptive skiing, paving the way for future generations of athletes with disabilities.

Golden achieved significant success throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. She won 10 World Disabled Ski Championships, including gold medals in slalom, giant slalom, and downhill. She also competed as a demonstration athlete in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, where adaptive skiing was showcased as a potential future event.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Golden was a vocal advocate for disability rights and inclusion in sports. She worked to raise awareness and promote opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in skiing and other athletic activities. Her impact extended beyond the slopes, inspiring many with her determination, resilience, and positive attitude. Diana Golden was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2006.
