Moorfields railway station (Northern Ireland)

Moorfields railway station served the village of Moorfields, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The station was located on the Belfast and Ballymena Railway line, later part of the Northern Counties Committee (NCC).

History

The station opened on 11 April 1848. It was situated on a single-track section of the line. The station building itself was modest, reflecting the rural nature of the area it served.

Services

Moorfields offered local passenger services along the Belfast-Ballymena line. These services connected the village with larger towns and cities, including Belfast, Ballymena, and Coleraine. The frequency of services varied over the years, generally reflecting the changing fortunes of the railway network.

Closure

Moorfields railway station closed on 4 January 1965 as part of wider cutbacks to the Northern Ireland railway network. The station building was subsequently demolished.

Remnants

Little remains of the original station site today. The railway line still exists and is operational, however no trace of the platform or station building remains at Moorfields. The site is largely overgrown, marking the end of rail travel for the village.
