Ballymoney (borough)

Ballymoney was a local government district and borough in Northern Ireland, situated in the northeast of the province. It was one of 26 districts created on 1 October 1973, following the reorganisation of local government, and was abolished on 1 April 2015.

The borough's administrative headquarters were located in the town of Ballymoney. It encompassed a largely rural area with a population primarily engaged in agriculture and related industries. Other significant settlements within the former borough included Dervock, Dunloy, and Stranocum.

The Ballymoney Borough Council was responsible for a range of local services, including refuse collection, street cleaning, parks and recreation, environmental health, and building control. The council consisted of elected representatives who were chosen through local elections held every four years.

Historically, the area experienced sectarian tensions, though community relations improved over time. The council actively promoted cross-community initiatives and worked towards fostering a more inclusive society.

In 2015, as part of a wider reform of local government in Northern Ireland, Ballymoney Borough Council merged with the neighbouring councils of Coleraine Borough Council, Limavady Borough Council and Moyle District Council to form the new Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. This restructuring aimed to streamline local government and improve service delivery across a larger geographical area. The former Ballymoney borough now forms part of the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council area.
