HMS Swordfish (1916)

HMS Swordfish was a British experimental submarine of the First World War. Constructed by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Greenock, Scotland, she was ordered on 1 March 1916 and launched on 27 March 1916.

Swordfish was designed to test the feasibility of a large, heavily armed submarine intended to operate in surface engagements. She was significantly larger than other British submarines of the time and carried a more substantial armament, including a 4-inch deck gun.

Her experimental nature meant that Swordfish underwent extensive trials and modifications throughout her service life. These tests explored various aspects of submarine design, including hull strength, buoyancy, and armament effectiveness. The information gathered from these trials was invaluable for the development of future British submarine classes.

Ultimately, Swordfish was deemed too large and unwieldy for effective combat operations. Her surface speed was insufficient for engaging surface targets effectively, and her diving time was considered too slow. She was paid off in 1917 and broken up in 1918, not having seen active service. Despite her lack of combat success, Swordfish played a crucial role in advancing submarine technology and shaping the design of subsequent British submarines.
