Daniel Sandford (bishop of Edinburgh)
Daniel Sandford (1766 – 1830) was a Scottish Episcopalian bishop. He served as Bishop of Edinburgh from 1806 until his death.
Born in Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland, Sandford was educated at the University of Edinburgh and Balliol College, Oxford. He was ordained into the Church of England in 1790. He initially served as a curate in Bath before returning to Scotland and aligning himself with the Scottish Episcopal Church.
His consecration as Bishop of Edinburgh in 1806 marked a significant period in the history of Scottish Episcopalianism, as it occurred during a time when the church was recovering from the Jacobite rebellions and facing considerable legal and social challenges. He played a vital role in revitalizing the diocese and promoting its growth through church building and the encouragement of education. Sandford's leadership helped to improve the standing and acceptance of the Scottish Episcopal Church within Scottish society.
He was a respected preacher and is remembered for his intellectual abilities and pastoral care.
