Paul Flaherty (musician)
Paul Flaherty (1948 – 2006) was an American free jazz saxophonist. Flaherty was known for his intensely energetic and uncompromising improvisations, often employing extended techniques. He primarily played tenor and alto saxophone, but also utilized soprano and sopranino saxophones, as well as various other instruments.
Flaherty began playing professionally in the late 1970s, initially in the Boston area before relocating to western Massachusetts. He was a key figure in the burgeoning free jazz scene of the region. He collaborated extensively with a wide range of musicians, including Chris Corsano, Randall Colbourne, Greg Kelley, and Steve Swell.
His discography includes numerous recordings on labels such as Cadence Jazz Records, Boxholder Records, and PKG Music. While not achieving widespread mainstream recognition, Flaherty garnered a dedicated following within the free jazz community, who appreciated his raw power and commitment to spontaneous musical expression. His music often explored themes of spirituality and personal struggle.
