History: Voluntari was established as a commune in 1921, originally named “Colentina-Popești.” The name was later changed to Voluntari, meaning "volunteers" in Romanian, in honor of the Romanian volunteers who fought in World War I. The area experienced significant growth in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, driven by its proximity to Bucharest and subsequent real estate development. It gained city status in 2004.
