Fongafale
Fongafale is the largest island and location of the capital city of Funafuti, in the island nation of Tuvalu. It is a narrow islet forming part of the Funafuti atoll. The main government buildings, airport, hospital, and the majority of the population of Tuvalu are located on Fongafale. The island is highly vulnerable to sea-level rise and the effects of climate change. Its low elevation and narrow landmass make it particularly susceptible to flooding and erosion. Overcrowding is also a concern due to the concentration of the population in this small area. Fongafale is connected to other islets within the Funafuti atoll by causeways. The island’s economy is primarily subsistence-based, supplemented by remittances from Tuvaluans working abroad and international aid.
