Chrysler minivans (RT)
The Chrysler minivans (RT) represent the fifth generation of Chrysler's minivan platform, produced from 2008 to 2020. They encompass the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan models. The RT designation distinguishes them from previous generations (AS, AP, NS, and RS).
Key features and characteristics of the RT generation include:
- "Stow 'n Go" Seating: Most models featured the "Stow 'n Go" seating system, allowing the second and third-row seats to be folded flat into under-floor compartments, providing a completely flat cargo area without removing the seats. Later models of the Grand Caravan offered a simplified "Super Stow 'n Go" system.
- Exterior Design: The RT generation introduced a more angular and modern exterior design compared to its predecessors.
- Engine Options: Throughout their production run, the RT minivans offered a variety of engine options, typically V6 engines paired with automatic transmissions.
- Trim Levels and Features: Both the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan were available in numerous trim levels, offering a range of features from basic to luxury, including entertainment systems, power-sliding doors, power liftgates, and advanced safety technologies (depending on the year and trim).
- Model Differentiation: While sharing a common platform, the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan were marketed to different audiences. The Town & Country was positioned as the more upscale and luxurious model, while the Grand Caravan was targeted towards value-conscious buyers.
Production of the Chrysler Town & Country ended in 2016, replaced by the Chrysler Pacifica. The Dodge Grand Caravan continued production until 2020. The RT generation represents a significant era in Chrysler's minivan history, offering innovative features and contributing to Chrysler's continued dominance in the minivan market.
