Opo (dolphin)

Opo was the name given to a bottlenose dolphin ( Tursiops truncatus ) who became famous in New Zealand during the summer of 1955-1956. She was a wild dolphin who frequented the small coastal town of Opononi in the Hokianga Harbour.

Opo was known for her friendly and playful interaction with humans, particularly children. She would allow children to ride on her back, play ball with her, and generally engage in uncharacteristically close contact. News of Opo's antics spread rapidly, and she became a major tourist attraction for the previously quiet town.

Unfortunately, Opo's story has a tragic ending. In March 1956, she was found dead, possibly killed by fishermen using gelignite to catch fish. Her death caused widespread mourning throughout New Zealand, and she became a symbol of the vulnerability of marine life and the importance of conservation.

Opo is remembered with a statue in Opononi, and her story remains a significant part of New Zealand folklore. The legal protection of dolphins in New Zealand was strengthened in the wake of her death, partly attributed to the public outcry over her loss.
