Jack Coughlin (artist)

Jack Coughlin (born 1932, Waterville, Maine; died 2013, Lexington, Massachusetts) was an American artist, best known for his etchings and aquatints. He was a master printmaker whose work frequently explored themes of mythology, literature, and the human figure.

Coughlin studied at the Portland School of Art (now Maine College of Art & Design) and later at the Boston Museum School. He also studied with Gabor Peterdi. He served in the military and traveled extensively, experiences that significantly influenced his artistic vision.

His printmaking techniques were characterized by meticulous detail and a strong sense of light and shadow. He often incorporated multiple plates and intricate layering to create rich, complex compositions. Coughlin's work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress. He taught printmaking at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst for many years, where he had a profound impact on generations of aspiring artists. His legacy continues through his artwork and the many students he mentored.
