Areithous
Areithous (Ancient Greek: Ἀρηίθοος) was a figure in Greek mythology, known primarily from Homer's Iliad. He was an Arcadian warrior, often referred to as "club-man Areithous" due to his preferred weapon being an iron club, rather than the more common spear or sword.
Areithous was killed by Lycurgus (son of Dryas) who ambushed him in a narrow pass. Lycurgus slew Areithous by stealth, disarming him and killing him with a spear. Areithous’ armor was then taken by Lycurgus, later to be given to Ereuthalion as a sign of friendship. Ereuthalion wore this armor when he challenged Abareus but was ultimately slain by him.
The mention of Areithous in the Iliad serves to illustrate the martial prowess and resourcefulness of Lycurgus, and highlights the theme of inherited or gifted armor and its significance in heroic warfare. He is a relatively minor character but his unusual weapon choice and violent demise contribute to the overall depiction of a brutal and heroic world.
