Dump (band)

Dump was an American indie rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1991. The project was primarily the work of James McNew, best known as the bassist for the band Yo La Tengo. Dump served as an outlet for McNew’s songwriting and vocal talents, often showcasing a more lo-fi and experimental sound than his work with Yo La Tengo.

The band's core members included McNew on vocals, guitar, bass, and keyboards, with various musicians contributing on drums and other instruments throughout the project's lifespan. Dump's music is characterized by its raw, sometimes intentionally imperfect, production quality, reflecting the DIY ethos of independent music.

Dump released several albums and EPs throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, including "Superpowerless" (1993), "I Can Hear Music" (1996), and "That Skinny Motherfucker With The High Voice?" (2000). The band's music is often described as melodic and quirky, drawing comparisons to other indie rock acts of the era. While never achieving mainstream success, Dump garnered a dedicated following among fans of independent and experimental music.

The band has been largely inactive in recent years, with McNew focusing primarily on his work with Yo La Tengo. However, Dump's music remains available and continues to be appreciated for its unique blend of catchy melodies and lo-fi experimentation.
