Peel (software)

Peel was a personalized TV and streaming guide application. It aimed to consolidate TV listings, streaming services, and smart remote control functionality into a single mobile application. The primary feature of Peel was its universal remote control functionality, leveraging the infrared (IR) blaster found on many older Android smartphones. This allowed users to control TVs, set-top boxes, DVD players, and other devices directly from their phone, eliminating the need for separate remote controls.

Beyond remote control features, Peel aggregated TV listings and streaming content, attempting to provide a unified interface for discovering and accessing shows and movies. The application learned user preferences over time, offering personalized recommendations and surfacing content from across different platforms.

Peel's development and support have been discontinued. The company behind the app faced challenges in maintaining its database of device codes and keeping pace with the rapidly evolving landscape of streaming services. Its functionality has largely been superseded by built-in smart TV features and dedicated remote control apps from manufacturers like Samsung and LG. Users are now typically encouraged to use device-specific applications for remote control and content discovery.
